Like any room in the house, there are so many ways you can decorate your little one’s room. I mostly tried to focus on items that, if she were to touch them, I would be okay with it, and that of course were cute! Here are some of the products that we bought and have particularly loved.
Lights
Little Lights is a Polish family owned and operated company that produces handmade wooden lamps. The lights are adorable – many different types of real and imaginary animals, trains, balloons, clouds, rainbows, etc. We got their owl light for our daughter, which she loves – her switching it off is part of our bedtime ritual. Their lights are made of solid pinewood and LED lights.
Wall decorations
The Wall Sticker Company is Australian, and they offer a wide range of adorable, removable wall stickers that are non-toxic. They state on their website: “Nursery wall stickers and wallpapers are safe to use. Our products are free of PVCs, BPAs, lead, pthalates, glyco-ethers, formaldehydes. We print using water-based inks for indoor air quality certification. The products are biodegradable and has a low fire rating.”
Cushions & Poufs
Kidkii is a Danish company with “a purpose to make beautiful and non-toxic products for the children.” I very much like their stated objective of offering non-toxic and biodegradable products. They claim to use non-toxic plant-based foam, though I have not looked deeply into this type of foam to know whether it emits any VOCs or the like. I bought their flower pillow set anyway for my daughter’s tent, and she absolutely loves them.
Nobodinoz – This is a French-Spanish company that offers organic and Oeko-Tex certified products. I love their focus on non toxic products that are ecologically friendly. Among other wonderful products, they offer adorable child-sized cushions. Many of these pillows are Oeko-Tex certified, though not all, so you need to check each product.
Lorena Canals – In addition to rugs, Lorena Canals offers super cute, handmade cushions that are washable and handmade with non-toxic dyes. Many of the pillows are made with cotton on the outside and polyester within, but I’m okay with that because of the use of natural dyes and cotton for the parts of the cushion that my little one touches. Also, many of their pillows are Oeko-Tex certified.
Rugs
Lorena Canals – The textiles produced by this company (with offices in Barcelona and New Delhi as well) are handmade and use mostly eco-friendly, natural materials. The pieces are colored using non-toxic dyes, zero waste, save water, and fulfill a social mission of educating the children of the factory’s craftswomen in India. They are not GOTS certified, however, like Under the Nile or Hook and Loom.
Hook and Loom – is a U.S. company that is serious about making “beautiful, comfortable, durable, and safe rugs without harming the earth” (their mission). They use GOTS-certified organic cotton and undyed wool. for their rugs. They are committed to: 1) finding the most Earth-friendly way to make their rugs, 2) never using dyes to create their products, 3) not using chemicals of any kind (flame retardants, pesticides, harmful detergents, etc.), 4) not using latex, which can off-gas, and 5) ensuring a safe and fair working environment.
Under the Nile – A U.S. company that uses GOTS-certified organic cotton from biodynamic farming in Cairo, Egypt for its textile products. The founder established the company to provide baby products that didn’t irritate a baby’s skin (her baby included), and also incorporate both sustainability practices and ethical production. Products include rugs, clothing, bedding, baby blankets, toys, and other textiles. Their rug selection includes small children’s play rugs (as pictured above).
Flensted mobiles – Admittedly, the Danish company that makes these mobiles are not particularly focused on using sustainable, non-toxic materials, from what I can read on their website. However, I am not particularly concerned given that they are small and are typically out of reach of small children. I just really like the neat mobile designs that they produce.
Osteheimer – Meanwhile, this German company makes beautiful, all-wooden mobiles that are safe to touch. They are hand-crafted and produced with only non-toxic paints and natural oils for finishing.
